The Bombshell Article

Posted on April 7, 2014

no_bullshitWhen we penned our What A Bunch of Shit post towards the end of last year, we knew at the time that we were spitting in the wind. After all, what chance does a blog featuring a pictogram getting shot in the ass have against the City, the CPD and their media lackeys?

Chicago Magazine has published, in our opinion, the article of the year. In short, all we can say is ‘holy shit…wtf’:

“Chicago conducted a 12-month examination of the Chicago Police Department’s crime statistics going back several years, poring through public and internal police records and interviewing crime victims, criminologists, and police sources of various ranks. We identified 10 people, including Groves, who were beaten, burned, suffocated, or shot to death in 2013 and whose cases were reclassified as death investigations, downgraded to more minor crimes, or even closed as noncriminal incidents—all for illogical or, at best, unclear reasons.

This troubling practice goes far beyond murders, documents and interviews reveal. Chicago found dozens of other crimes, including serious felonies such as robberies, burglaries, and assaults, that were misclassified, downgraded to wrist-slap offenses, or made to vanish altogether.”

We knew it… we knew it… we fucking knew it. Please read the whole thing.

Keep it short and to the point. Name calling and similar stupidity will be deleted. If you insist on writing several paragraphs, start your own blog.

do you have a chart based upon homicides per 100,000 residents.

    • W.H.Thompson April 8, 2014 at 9:14 am

We do not. However, we are looking into doing something like that for the individual neighborhoods as opposed to the entire city.

      • gotwood4sale April 10, 2014 at 8:18 am

Just to let you know ‘W.H. Thompson’…the author Brad Thor, while being interviewed by Bruce & Dan on WLS this morning, highly recommended this website. Our family is so glad to have found you.

During the course of his interview Brad announced that he and his family will be moving from Chicago to the Nashville area. We will likely be following Brad and his family out of Illinois. We’re checking out the Louisville area. Like Chicago both cities have crime problems, but at least those cities or areas don’t ask the taxpayers to subsidize their crime as much as Chicago does.

By the way, Brad ripped Madigan and Emanuel big time. He was born and raised here and would prefer to stay, but he can’t tolerate it anymore. He literally got ‘taxed out’ of Illinois. It was such a pleasure to listen to him and I’m glad he spoke so highly of your website.

        • W.H.Thompson April 10, 2014 at 8:37 am

Yep. We heard the interview and noticed the subsequent avalanche in site traffic. We thanked Mr. Thor via our Twitter feed.

          • gotwood4sale April 10, 2014 at 11:43 am

An avalanche. Yikes. I get so confused. Best survival technique for that is ‘Duck & Cover’…right?

Seriously…that’s a welcome avalanche. Keep up the good work.

What a powerful article!!! Now that this is out and the main media outlets are starting to run with it, it is time to sit back and watch the comedy troupe of Rahm, Garry and the Aldermen of the city start stuttering and stammering through trying to figure a way to sugar coat the truth! Oh this is going to be fun to watch! I can’t wait for Garry and Rahm to trot out first quarter crime statistics to the smirks and chuckles of the reporters!

  3. NYC2AZ April 8, 2014 at 11:05 am

Keep it up W.H.T.! Your site is a ray of truth in the sea that is “the Chicago way”.

    • W.H.Thompson April 8, 2014 at 11:06 am

You bet! Thanks for the compliment.

  4. Johan Meyer April 8, 2014 at 1:31 pm

That does beg the question though, by how much crime is in fact up or down in a given month. Do you have your own data for last year this time, or are you using police data?

    • W.H.Thompson April 8, 2014 at 1:37 pm

We compile our own data set for homicides and shootings using all the various media outlets as sources, plus scanner traffic. We use CPD data for other violent crimes like robberies and assaults since nearly all of those incidents go unreported.

  5. patrick griffin April 9, 2014 at 12:51 am

It would be interesting to see not only crime per 100,000, but how much money from state and federal dollars are wasted…I mean thrown away. ..no I mean invested in that area..
it would be interesting to see how much money has gone into Austin or Paulsen the last decade in food stamps…housing… education…etc and what ROI taxpayers are getting

    • W.H.Thompson April 9, 2014 at 2:27 pm

Indeed it would. We’d wager that the more “investment” that has been made over the years, the worse it’s gotten. But that would be based on reality math and not Skittle-farting Unicorn math.

      • gotwood4sale April 10, 2014 at 7:55 am

But, but, but reality math isn’t as fun or splendorously colorful as Skittle® -farting Unicorn math.

  6. Parker April 9, 2014 at 12:01 pm

The nasty thing about facts is once they’ve been let out of the bag they’re just as persistent as rumor or propaganda.

It will be interesting to see which will be the bigger story, the real numbers or the “why” of the obfuscation.

    • W.H.Thompson April 9, 2014 at 2:25 pm

Our hope is that the next time the Streetight Assassin states “fewest murders since the Fort Dearborn Massacre” that more people question it instead of simply parroting the company line.

  7. James Manos April 9, 2014 at 1:57 pm

Love the site, I share it with everyone I meet that is interested in the truth about crime stats.

    • W.H.Thompson April 9, 2014 at 2:22 pm

      Awesome, thank you!

  8. Krazee Loon April 9, 2014 at 3:25 pm

I just can’t believe that the upstanding Chicago politicians and bureaucrats would stoop to this type of tom foolery. HA.. who am I kidding! Love the web site!

    • W.H.Thompson April 9, 2014 at 3:49 pm

They’re a silly bunch. Thanks for the compliment.

      • Mike April 10, 2014 at 10:51 pm

Chi is on the list of Interpol’s cities to avoid on this planet because of violent crime. That says it all.. And I live in Chicago and back LE 100% 24/7.

  9. the count April 9, 2014 at 8:24 pm

Gunsmoke, Dillon always had a shovel in his saddle bag. Let’s put them in squad cars!

  10. Mike April 9, 2014 at 10:53 pm

This crap will never end in Chicago. Never so the stats are meaningless.
Until the Feds get involved with the war on drugs, really get involved, then it is all with regret meaningless BS. The animals will simply keep killing each other and keep Chicago on the international watch list of cities to avoid. Thank you liberal assholes for what you have accomplished.

  11. Krazee Loon April 10, 2014 at 8:28 am

Mike, I don’t know how you can reasonably blame this stuff on liberal assholes. I mean just look at the cities run by conservatives like Detroit.. oh wait… well how about Philadelphia… uhhhh. ok.. how about Washington D.C, Houston, Baltimore, New Orleans, Oakland…. right? Uhhh… never mind.

  12. aa April 10, 2014 at 9:15 am

ytd 296 shot wounded. do you know what the medical costs are to treat 296 shot and wounded? how much of the medical tab is picked up by you the taxpayer? this year last year year before that etc…?

    • W.H.Thompson April 10, 2014 at 9:18 am

We do not know the cost, but one would assume it’s significant, especially for those who are put on life support. We do know that the average ambulance run is around $600-$1000 and the CFD only has success in collecting that 35% of the time.

  13. G. McCarthy April 10, 2014 at 10:08 am

The Chicago magazine article has been reclassified as an accident.

    • W.H.Thompson April 10, 2014 at 10:09 am

Good one. We’ll be tweeting that one out as our comment of the day.

  14. patrick griffin April 11, 2014 at 5:22 am

With warm weather this weekend I put the over for dead at 8 and shot at 17 through Monday…lot of media stories will focus on the Rickets…the spring flowers and Hillary’s amazing perseverance as a woman in politics.

  16. Big Al April 11, 2014 at 12:16 pm

Great website. Also heard Brad Thor on WLS radio. I thought it was great how he ripped all these socialist politicians. As a citizen to hear crime is going down everyday from the week, month and year prior everyday in the state run media we must be in the negative on all crimes. Thanks for your website. I recommend it to everyone for true stats.

      Thanks Al.

  17. Bob Angone April 28, 2014 at 7:55 am

Please remind your faithful that “Chicago” will be publishing another article on the giant “fudge pot” of crime evaporation. This one should be even more telling than the ‘murder/homicide/death investigation/Dan Ryan”not in Chicago” / stuff.

    • W.H.Thompson April 28, 2014 at 8:06 am

You’re right Bob. We’re thinking that Part II will be even more damning.
