Summer Lovin’

Posted on September 5, 2019

Bozo's Grand Prize GameAt the start of the Summer Shooting Season, we predicted 200 homicides and an additional 950 shot and wounded thinking that record breaking Spring rains would have delayed the stupidity. However, our forecast fell short and found itself hanging out with 2014 instead.

Summer ’19*: 167 killed, 892 wounded
Summer ’18: 209 killed, 921 wounded
Summer ’17: 240 killed, 1,065 wounded
Summer ’16: 276 killed, 1,283 wounded
Summer ’15: 212 dead, 998 wounded
Summer ’14: 169 dead, 847 wounded

A breakdown of the Season’s stupidity shows:

  • 152 (91%) shot & killed
  • 12 (7%) stabbed
  • 3 (2%) killed via other means
  • A person killed every 14 hours, 36 minutes
  • A person shot & wounded every 2 hours, 44 minutes
  • Everyday tallied at least one shooting
  • 87% of homicides were on South & West sides
  • At least 18 ongoing “death investigations”
  • 4 police-involved shootings, 2 fatal
  • 12 homicide-linked arrests
  • 169 in serious or critical condition
  • 148 males killed vs 19 females
  • Average age of a homicide victim, 30
  • Youngest homicide victim, 1, oldest, 70
  • 154 teenagers shot, 21 killed
  • 48 grazed
  • 22 selfies
  • 54 #ShotInTheAss
  • 208 shot by the State of Indiana

The current trend puts 2019’s final numbers in the range of 480-520 homicides with 2,500 total people shot. Those numbers would be good enough for a “crime is down” parade down State St.
