Summer Lovin’

Posted on September 5, 2018

Chicagoland RahmBack at the start of the Summer Shooting Season, we predicted 250 homicides and an additional 1,000 shot and wounded thinking that the cool and wet spring would have delayed the stupidity. Despite setting an “unacceptable” single day record of 49 shot on August 5th, our forecast fell way short and found itself somewhere between the 2014 and 2015 tallies.

Summer ’18*: 202 killed, 928 wounded
Summer ’17: 240 killed, 1,065 wounded
Summer ’16: 276 killed, 1,283 wounded
Summer ’15: 212 dead, 998 wounded
Summer ’14: 169 dead, 847 wounded

A breakdown of the Season’s stupidity shows:

  • 180 shot & killed
  • 11 beaten
  • 11 killed via other means
  • A person killed every 12 hours, 5 minutes
  • A person shot every 2 hours, 12 minutes
  • Everyday tallied a minimum of 3 shot
  • 94% of homicides were on South & West sides
  • 18 ongoing “death investigations”
  • 7 police-involved shootings, 4 fatal
  • 21 homicide-linked arrests
  • 187 in serious or critical condition
  • 170 males killed vs 32 females
  • Average age of a homicide victim, 29.7
  • 227 teenagers shot, 27 killed
  • 60 grazed
  • 13 selfies
  • 34 #ShotInTheAss

The current trend puts 2018’s final numbers right around of 600 homicides and just to the north 3,100 total people shot. Those numbers are just good enough for the annual “crime is down” New Years Eve press releases.
