May Wrap-up

Posted on May 31, 2018

Carnac the Magnificent Spring Training wrapped up with the wettest May on record which followed the 4th coldest April which followed a very chilly March. Regardless, another average month will be touted as a “remarkable” drop in something something.

May 2018: 51 killed, 264 wounded
May 2017: 59 killed, 269 wounded
May 2016: 69 killed, 339 wounded
May 2015: 50 killed, 281 wounded
May 2014: 47 killed, 230 wounded

A breakdown of the month’s idiocy shows:

  • 44 shot & killed
  • 4 stabbed
  • 3 death by other means
  • 1 non-fatal police shooting
  • 1 CPD officer shot
  • 2 homicide-linked arrests
  • Averaged 10 people shot per day
  • 6 days were homicide-free
  • 5 death investigations
  • 46 in serious or critical condition
  • 43 males killed vs 7 females
  • 66 teenagers shot, 8 killed
  • 20 grazed
  • 6 selfies
  • 13 #ShotInTheAss

Our May forecast of 55 homicides and 265 shot and wounded was a bit short for one and more or less “dead on” for the other. Looking ahead, June is usually the slowest month of the Summer Shooting Season, however the past couple of years have tallied mid-1990s like numbers. While we do not expect that trend to continue, we will likely see elevated counts as the summer weather settles in. We’re forecasting 65 homicides with an additional 310 shot and wounded which would put us a good deal below last year’s tally (86/322) and well below 2016’s (78/373).
