Posted on August 5, 2020

Carnac the MagnificentComing off an “unacceptable” June was a more-unacceptable’r July posting recorded numbers for our dataset and rivaling totals from the early 1990s. 107 homicides puts July 2020 in 4th place since the 1950s behind Sept 1992’s 109, Nov 1974’s 117 and Aug 1991’s 122.

July 2020: 107 killed, 496 wounded
July 2019: 45 killed, 287 wounded
July 2018: 67 killed, 265 wounded

July 2016: 74 killed, 381 wounded
July 2015: 58 killed, 271 wounded

We were looking for a slight slowdown from June’s pacing with 80 homicides and 400 shot and wounded, but clearly we were way off. Looking ahead, with now three disastrous and record setting months in the books, August will most likely continue the trend, but we have to get a slow down, even if temporary, at some point. We’re forecasting another 90 homicides and an additional 400 shot and wounded with #500 hitting somewhere mid-month.
