February Wrap-up

Posted on February 28, 2018

Carnac the Magnificent The new normal spit out a now average February which will produce statements on how “remarkable” the drop was from last year’s shitshow as this and that did something that’s impossible to quantify, but it totally worked, just ignore 2015 or earlier.

February 2018: 39 killed, 149 wounded
February 2017: 51 killed, 165 wounded
February 2016: 46 killed, 156 wounded
February 2015: 20 killed, 59 wounded
February 2014: 22 killed, 54 wounded

A breakdown of the month’s idiocy shows:

  • 31 shot & killed
  • 4 stabbed
  • 2 strangled
  • 2 beaten
  • 1 non-fatal police shooting
  • 10 homicide-linked arrests
  • Averaged 5.3 people shot per day
  • 6 days were homicide-free
  • 4 death investigations
  • 23 in serious or critical condition
  • 33 males killed vs 6 females
  • 42 teenagers shot, 8 killed
  • 5 grazed
  • 3 selfies
  • 8 #ShotInTheAss

Our February guesstimate of “35 homicides with another 150 shot and wounded” was almost dead on. Per usual, the trend bottoms with February and will now see a gradual climb as the weather turns and practice begins ahead of the annual summer shooting season. We’re forecasting a 45 homicide March with an additional 180 shot and wounded which would be slightly ahead of last year’s 40/175 combination.

February bonus fact – 2/28/15, 3 years ago, was the last day Chicago saw a day without a shooting and/or a homicide.
