Statement From Second City Cop

SCC explains the decision to shut down their website:

Well, this was certainly a long time coming. Fifteen years, over 22,000 posts, almost two million comments and God knows how many attempts to silence us. But it might finally be over…at least this version of it.

Over the weekend, we received information from a contact at Google that internal chat/e-mails led them to believe that certain precautions we had taken over the years had been breached by Google. We had gotten similar warnings from others in the past, and we dealt with or ignored them as the situation warranted. But this one was different.

And this one – on the heels of Big Tech’s wholesale attack on the President, Parler and center-right to right-leaning authors, politicians and voices – pointed to a countdown that had far less time than we had thought. Most likely, far less time than you think, too. The blacklisting has begun, even if you won’t see it. You should – the wholesale abandonment of the President, the denunciations, the, “I wasn’t really with him” self-serving statements. Sound familiar? It should…if you have any recollections of the show trials behind the Iron Curtain, in Southeast Asia, in assorted Middle East kleptocracies.

Disavowal and re-education is on tap. What Senator McCarthy is remembered for – “Are you now or have you ever been…” has been twisted, refined (Bake that cake!), and exacerbated (Parler is only the first of many). They don’t want “unity.” They want Compliance and as the last fifteen years have shown, we aren’t really good at compliance. The amount of personal data available to “woke companies” who would deny commerce or service based on beliefs, contributions, investments (not Green enough!), social media posting, employment (cops not welcome here), bumper stickers – Have you heard of Operation Choke Point? Look it up and imagine it drilled down to individual citizens. Orwell’s 1984? It’s here.

In closing, we’d just like to thank a few people:

  • Phil Cline – without you banning us from Department computers, we wouldn’t have jumped from 3,000 visits a day to over 30,000 unique daily visits. You, more than anyone, assisted in our success. Some days it topped 50,000, but we thank you for the ten-fold increase. Too bad you can’t ban the next generation SCC;
  • HeyJackass.com – the only true source of crime numbers. We know you’ll ferret out a few more hidden bodies to put 2020 over 800. We guarantee that they’re out there. Groot has ordered the Department to sit on over 20 of them;
  • CWB blog – you are what reporting should be in Chicago. We don’t know your operation, if it’s phone calls or emails or actual feet on the street, but you do more to create informed citizens than major newspapers and broadcast entities;
  • The Chaplains – Fr. Brandt has done and continues to do God’s work. It is the only police charity we contribute to because we know exactly where every dollar is going. And there isn’t a finer man of G-d alive than Rabbi Wolfe. When we hear he’s in the building, around the District or on a crime scene, we’re getting a handshake and our candy – it’s like a scavenger hunt. The rest are decent people, too. Sorry we only ever got you the $50 from WGN Padre. Maybe others contributed anonymously, but that’s between them and God.
  • Our readers. Without you, we would have been nothing. Even last week, we still posted over 90% of comments that didn’t run afoul of the guidelines, and in 15 years, we only had permanent bans on perhaps thirty names.

We have a few hundred e-mails waiting for us, begging for info, and all we can say right now is, “We don’t know.” We don’t know if this is it, we don’t know if we’ll return. We don’t know what Big Tech has in store for us and the political winds are not fortuitous. We are exploring options and we’ll leave it at that.

In the meantime, everyone reading should make these sites the first place you go for news and educated opinion:

  • Ace of Spades blog – the smartest blog in the world right now
  • Instapundit / PJ Media – the Godfather of Libertarian blogging
  • Breitbart – even when it’s over the top, it’s more than you’ll get from mainstream sources
  • The Contrarian – in depth investigative reporting may just be reborn there

Watch your backs boys and girls. And your fronts. No one else will.

(Mostly Peaceful) Year In Review

Father TimeWell, that was a real shitshow. The year started off roughly inline with past average years and it wasn’t until the last weekend in May when the wheels came off. It took us days to get a final tally for that weekend (29 killed, 65 wounded) and it didn’t stop there. A few weekends later, Father’s Day weekend posted a record tally of 17 killed with 95 wounded. Throw in some additional looting on Michigan Ave and Grant Park rioting and in the end it was a summer for the record books. “Two weeks to flatten the curve” became one weekend to bend the curve, upwards, sharply.

2020: 792 killed, 3,455 wounded
2019: 519 killed, 2,292 wounded
2018: 592 killed, 2,465 wounded
2017: 685 killed, 2,935 wounded
2016: 808 killed, 3,658 wounded
2015: 513 killed, 2,546 wounded
2014: 464 killed, 2,230 wounded
2013: 455 killed, 2,185 wounded

A breakdown of the year’s idiocy shows:

  • 719 shot & killed
  • 37 stabbed
  • 36 killed via other means
  • 20 shot by police, 7 fatal
  • 20 self defense, 11 fatal
  • At least 19 ongoing death investigations
  • 115 homicide-linked arrests
  • Averaged 11 people shot per day
  • Jan 7th only day without a shooting
  • 69 days were homicide-free
  • 691 in serious or critical condition
  • 704 (88.8%) males killed vs 88 females
  • 627 (79.2%) Blacks, 131 Hispanics, 34 White/Other
  • 53 children 12 and younger shot, 6 fatal
  • 697 teenagers shot, 98 fatal
  • Homicide age range: 0-96
  • Team Austin won w/ 375 shot, 78 fatal
  • 223 grazed
  • 40 selfies
  • 221 #ShotInTheAss
  • 1400+ carjackings (+130% YoY)

Our prediction of 525-550 homicides with another 2500 shot and wounded for 2020 fell almost as short as Lori’s city budget and revenue projections. Given our recently reelected, pro-criminal State’s Attorney, the “not horrible” Cook County judiciary, our anti-cop-but-not-technically-defunding-the-police mayor, a scheduled wave of CPD retirements plus the continuing Non-Essentials’ economic destruction plan, we’ll likely see another 700+ homicide year with another 3250 shot and wounded. We also expect all hell to break loose at some point over the summer if for no other reason than it can and why the hell not?

As always, many thanks to everyone who visited, liked, retweeted, emailed, hit the tip jar and/or picked up some merchandise this past year. Have yourself a safe and prosperous new year.

Year End Calculus

HomerSeeing as how we only have hours left in 2020, we wanted to post a quick note to illustrate how the year end totals are accounted for and how best to compare this year to years past.

Past year end totals reflected on this site account for resolved death investigations, found bodies and late passings that can and will occur for many years after the clock strikes midnight on Jan 1st. We apply those incidents towards the time of occurrence, not date of death. Other agencies, such as the CPD, choose to add those resolved death investigations, found bodies and late passings to the year in which the death was recorded.

Despite the tiresome “it was worse in the 90s” refrain, the most common comparison for 2020 is the more recent and relevant 2016. On January 1st 2017, the final totals for 2016 were:
Shot & Killed: 713
Shot & Wounded: 3,665
Total Shot: 4,378
Total Homicides: 795

Over the past few years, those totals have been slowly adjusted to show:
Shot & Killed: 722 (+9)
Shot & Wounded: 3,658 (-7)
Total Shot: 4,380 (+2)
Total Homicides: 808 (+13)

No matter where 2020 ends up on January 1st, it will join 2016 as one of the most violent years of this century with a homicide tally that will slowly increase over the coming years to eventually eclipse 800.

October Wrap-up

Carnac the MagnificentWhile the election is taking up most of the oxygen in the room of late, October went ahead and posted its worst tally since the last major election year of 2016. Officialdom decided the best comparison was to use April’s 58/195 as its “lowest since” metric thereby skipping five months of unacceptability.

October 2020: 69 killed, 297 wounded
October 2019: 40 killed, 192 wounded
October 2018: 54 killed, 209 wounded
October 2017: 59 killed, 227 wounded
October 2016: 82 killed, 348 wounded
October 2015: 31 killed, 203 wounded
October 2014: 39 killed, 215 wounded
October 2013: 35 killed, 98 wounded

A breakdown of the month’s idiocy shows:

  • 62 shot & killed
  • 4 stabbed
  • 3 killed via other means
  • 1 shot by police, fatal
  • 4 self defense, 2 fatal
  • 7 homicide-linked arrests
  • Averaged 11 people shot per day
  • 3 days were homicide-free
  • 74 in serious or critical condition
  • 61 males killed vs 8 females
  • 57 Blacks, 10 Hispanics, 2 White/Other
  • 4 children 12 and younger shot
  • 53 teenagers shot, 5 fatally
  • Homicide age range: newborn-69
  • Team Garfield Park led w/ 46 shot, 7 fatal
  • 17 grazed
  • 2 selfies
  • 25 #ShotInTheAss

Our October forecast of 60 homicides with an additional 300 shot and wounded is likely to be more accurate than any election poll. November will look to continue the trend and post yet another 60 homicides with 275 finding themselves shot and wounded. Our year end guesstimate still has us looking at 750 to 800 homicides and upwards of 4000 shot and wounded.

September Wrap-up

Carnac the MagnificentWhile May, June & July ended up being “unacceptable”, record breaking months and August provided an ever so slight respite, September pulls a “hold my beer” and puts up totals rivaling the early 90s.

September 2020: 84 killed, 325 wounded
September 2019: 54 killed, 212 wounded
September 2018: 49 killed, 207 wounded
September 2017: 61 killed, 273 wounded
September 2016: 69 killed, 301 wounded
September 2015: 63 killed, 303 wounded
September 2014: 46 killed, 211 wounded
September 2013: 42 killed, 154 wounded

A breakdown of the month’s idiocy shows:

  • 74 shot & killed
  • 6 stabbed
  • 4 killed via other means
  • 2 shot by police, 1 fatally
  • 2 shot by off duty police, 0 fatally
  • 1 shot by CCW, nonfatal
  • 10 homicide-linked arrests
  • Averaged 13 people shot per day
  • 2 days were homicide-free
  • 81 in serious or critical condition
  • 71 males killed vs 12 females
  • 65 Blacks, 15 Hispanics, 3 White/Other
  • 5 children 12 and younger shot
  • 68 teenagers shot, 12 fatally
  • Homicide age range: 3-86
  • Team Englewood led w/ 38 shot, 8 fatal
  • 27 grazed
  • 3 selfies
  • 16 #ShotInTheAss

We went 2 for 3 on our forecast of 60 homicides and an additional 325 shot and wounded with #3000 person shot hitting the board on the 14th. October will most likely continue the Season’s trend. We’re forecasting another 60 homicides and an additional 300 shot and wounded. Our early guesstimate for year end has us looking at 750 to 800 homicides and upwards of 4000 shot and wounded.

Summer Lovin’

Bozo's Grand Prize GameThis year’s Summer Shooting Season not only nailed bucket number six to win a brand new Schwinn bicycle and new, crisp 100 dollar bill, it also managed to take home some high end goods courtesy of Michigan Ave retailers and took numerous field trips to the morgue.

Summer 2020*: 343 killed, 1,606 wounded
Summer 2019: 172 killed, 890 wounded
Summer 2018: 210 killed, 924 wounded
Summer 2017: 240 killed, 1,068 wounded
Summer 2016: 276 killed, 1,292 wounded
Summer 2015: 213 dead, 998 wounded
Summer 2014: 158 dead, 848 wounded

A breakdown of the Season’s stupidity shows:

  • 317 (92.4%) shot & killed
  • 14 (4.1%) stabbed
  • 12 (3.5%) killed via other means
  • A person killed every 7 hours, 36 minutes
  • A person shot & wounded every 1 hours, 37 minutes
  • Everyday tallied at least six people shot
  • Only eight days did not record a homicide
  • 92% of homicides were on South & West sides
  • 8 police-involved shootings, 2 fatal
  • 41 homicide-linked arrests
  • 293 in serious or critical condition
  • 301 males killed vs 42 females
  • Killed: 285 Blacks, 47 Hispanics, 9 Whites
  • Average age of a homicide victim, 30
  • Youngest homicide victim, 1, oldest, 96
  • 31 kids 12 & under shot, 6 killed
  • 291 teenagers shot, 42 killed
  • 97 grazed
  • 16 selfies
  • 112 #ShotInTheAss
  • 385 shot by the State of Indiana (20%)

The current trend puts 2020’s final numbers in the upper 700s to low 800 homicide range with 4,000 total people shot which is right around where 2016 concluded. Given the current mostly peaceful environment with the likelihood for additional peace outbreaks and involuntary retail redistribution, we very well may see higher tallies.

* The Summer Shooting Season runs from 12p Friday of Memorial Day weekend thru 6a Tuesday of Labor Day weekend. 2014, 2016 – 2019 = 101 days, 18 hours or 2,442 hours. 2015 & 2020 = 108 days, 18 hours or 2,610 hours.

Summer’s Finale

Closing Scene from The Blues BrothersLabor Day weekend means it’s time to draw the curtain on another mostly peaceful Summer Shooting Season. Final Stupidity Tally: 12 killed, 47 wounded
2019 Labor Day weekend: 11 killed, 38 wounded
2018 Labor Day weekend: 11 killed, 21 wounded
2017 Labor Day weekend: 7 killed, 40 wounded
2016 Labor Day weekend: 13 killed, 53 wounded
2015 Labor Day weekend: 10 killed, 46 wounded
2014 Labor Day weekend: 7 killed, 38 wounded
2013 Labor Day weekend: 12 killed, 27 wounded

August Wrap-up

Carnac the MagnificentAfter three “unacceptable”, record breaking months in a row, August managed to tap the breaks ever so slightly and not break too many records of recent vintage – total wounded (430) and total shot count (493) – with a decrease in the increase vs a record July.

August 2020: 66 killed, 430 wounded
August 2019: 51 killed, 241 wounded
August 2018: 60 killed, 302 wounded
August 2017: 55 killed, 289 wounded
August 2016: 98 killed, 398 wounded
August 2015: 57 killed, 306 wounded
August 2014: 55 killed, 250 wounded

A breakdown of the month’s idiocy shows:

  • 63 shot & killed
  • 3 killed via other means
  • 3 shot by CPD, 1 fatally
  • 3 CPD officers shot, 0 fatally
  • 1 shot by CCW, nonfatal
  • 8 homicide-linked arrests
  • Averaged 16 people shot per day
  • 5 days was homicide-free
  • 82 in serious or critical condition
  • 59 males killed vs 7 females
  • 52 Blacks, 8 Hispanics, 3 Whites
  • 5 children 12 and younger shot
  • 73 teenagers shot, 7 fatally
  • Homicide age range: 14-72
  • Team Austin led w/ 47 shot, 8 fatal
  • 23 grazed
  • 3 selfies
  • 33 #ShotInTheAss

We’ve been looking for a slowdown in killings, which we got, but it was made up for by the number of shooting victims. We had forecasted 90 homicides with an additional 400 shot and wounded, which while each individual metric was off, the overall total was dead on. Despite the official Summer Shooting Season wrapping up this weekend, September will most likely continue the Season’s trend. We’re forecasting another 60 homicides and an additional 325 shot and wounded with #3000 person shot coming in mid-month.

Mostly Peaceful Weekend

Nothing to See Here Folks... Naked GunJersey Barriers and decorative flower pots on Michigan Ave, plywood forests sprouting again downtown, 12-hour shifts and officer safety alerts issued, plus all the usual nonsense has all the ingredients for a mostly peaceful weekend.

We’ve Got Issues

Press Any Key A behind the scenes auto-update f’d something up with the navigation and the layout. As we try and figure out what happened and apply another band-aid, aside from the running totals, updates will be sparse. If this happens to be the end of the line for our eight year old template, we’ll look into trading up to a 2020 model and have this one declared another tragic COVID-19 death.

UPDATE: A roll of duct tape later and we appear to be back in business. We’re actively exploring new templates given the terminal state of the current implementation.

Weekend = 12p Thursday – 6a Monday
*Different years have different time frames depending on what day the 4th fell on. 2014-2016 & 2020 all ran for 3.75 days, 2013, 2017 & 2019 are 4.75 days and 2018 was a marathon 5.75 days.

June Wrap-up

Carnac the MagnificentThis June was a record setting, “unacceptable”, complete and total shitshow. The homicide count ties beats the mid-90s for most ever; the total shot number is 50+ more than our record peak of 482 in August 2016; 111 shot over Father’s Day weekend; tallied a 30 day homicide run rate of 110, and so on… What a disaster.

June 2020: 94 killed, 467 wounded
June 2019: 50 killed, 274 wounded
June 2018: 60 killed, 289 wounded
June 2017: 86 killed, 322 wounded
June 2016: 78 killed, 373 wounded
June 2015: 51 killed, 244 wounded
June 2014: 39 killed, 248 wounded

A breakdown of the month’s idiocy shows:

  • 89 shot & killed
  • 2 shot by CPD, 0 fatally
  • 2 shot by CCW, 0 fatally
  • 10 homicide-linked arrests
  • Averaged over 18 people shot per day
  • 2 days were homicide-free
  • 75 in serious or critical condition
  • 86 males killed vs 8 females
  • 3 children fatally shot, 1, 3 & 10
  • 69 teenagers shot, 14 fatally
  • Youngest victim, 1, oldest, 61
  • 32 grazed
  • 6 selfies
  • 34 #ShotInTheAss

We didn’t post a forecast for June given the reverb from the mostly peaceful riots, but we were looking for around 60 homicides (whiffed) and 275 shot and wounded (not even close). Looking ahead, with two disastrous months in the books, July will most likely continue the trend and put up at least 80 homicides and an additional 400 shot and wounded. This will put more distance between last year’s number and keep the pace with 2016 & 2017.

Pride Weekend Stupidity

Pride Weekend 2020 - CancelledTypically, this weekend competes with St. Pats or Halloween for the unleaded stupidity title, but with the parade and after show cancelled this year, we’ll instead have to settle for adding to the already record run.

2018 weekend tally: 3 killed, 23 wounded

2016 weekend tally: 8 killed, 50 wounded
2015 weekend tally: 5 killed, 24 wounded

Not-A-Lockdown April

Carnac the Magnificent While Mayor Scolding Karen and Governor Mass Gathering yammer on daily about how if we go outside we’ll commit mass murder (except for haircuts and horse farms), actual mass murdering continued at an elevated pace despite “this is not a lockdown, it’s not martial law” in place for the entire month.

April 2020: 57 killed, 195 wounded
April 2019: 66 killed, 187 wounded
April 2018: 42 killed, 181 wounded
April 2017: 49 killed, 270 wounded
April 2016: 40 killed, 274 wounded
April 2015: 37 killed, 204 wounded
April 2014: 37 killed, 232 wounded

A breakdown of the month’s idiocy shows:

  • 53 (93%) shot & killed
  • 2 stabbed
  • 2 beaten
  • A person killed every 12 hours, 38 minutes
  • A person shot & wounded every 3 hours, 42 minutes
  • 6 days were homicide-free
  • 0 shot by CPD
  • 2 ruled self defense
  • 2 homicide-linked arrests
  • 28 in serious or critical condition
  • 52 males killed vs 5 females
  • 47 Blacks killed vs 5 Hispanics vs 5 Whites
  • Average age of a homicide victim, 30
  • Youngest homicide victim, 15, oldest, 68
  • 47 teenagers shot, 5 killed
  • 12 grazed
  • 5 selfies
  • 15 #ShotInTheAss

Given the not-a-lockdown and a slowing March, we were guessing April would come in at most around 40 homicides with another 150 shot and wounded. Silly us for thinking diktats and decrees mean anything to trigger pullers and lead catchers. Now with Spring Training in its final weeks and warmer weather cancelling out the scolding, we’re forecasting a 60 homicide May with an additional 250 shot and wounded. The usual Memorial Day weekend shitshow may be more so than usual.
