March Wrap-up
Posted on April 5, 2017
After February’s disaster, March settled down a bit to a more historical run rate (with the help of winter weather) which was promptly interpreted as an epic CRIME IS DOWN! moment. Crime is now so far down that last year is the only year out of the past eight to (barely) outpace this year.
March 2017: 38 killed, 176 wounded
March 2016: 49 killed, 282 wounded
March 2015: 35 killed, 179 wounded
March 2014: 27 killed, 104 wounded
A breakdown of the month’s idiocy shows:
- 36 shot & killed
- 1 non-fatal LEO shooting
- Averaged 6.8 people shot per day
- 15 days were homicide-free. Success!
- 2 death investigations
- 33 in serious or critical condition
- 33 males killed vs 3 females
- 50 teenagers shot, 7 killed
- 8 grazed
- 2 selfies
- 14 #ShotInTheAss
Looking ahead, April is always mixed bag – cold and rainy vs warm and sunny – will help dictate how the month plays out. As spring showers give way to May flowers, spring training for the summer shooting season will pick up in earnest. We’re looking for 47 homicides plus another 250 shot and wounded.
