Danger

Lost in SpaceA cool and wet May helped tamp down the stupidity a bit which was good enough for “at least it’s not as bad as last year”. Now a warmer and therefore more violent June has been running up the score and as of this post, 2017 has now once again tied 2016. Of course this is “unacceptable” and we’ll be on the lookout for new strategies, including but not limited to further depletion of police manpower from the non-warzone parts of town and accelerated development of a supervillan weather control device.

Self Defense, Again (x2)

Self Defense ZoneAs is the case every summer, as the weather heats up, the amount of lead flying around town goes up as well. While most of said lead comes from and/or is directed towards the usual suspects, occasionally, non-aligned individuals are keen on keeping what’s theirs. First up, down on the south side:

A man shot and killed the person who wounded him during an attempted robbery Monday night in the South Side Gresham neighborhood, according to police.

A 39-year-old man was in the 8300 block of South Elizabeth at 8:15 p.m. when he was approached by Dana Matthews, 18, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Matthews shot the older man in the abdomen, but the older man returned fire, striking the alleged robber twice in the legs and twice in the neck, police said.

Meanwhile, downtown of all places, the same idea with less deadly results:

A concealed carry holder who was being robbed in the Loop Wednesday afternoon fired his gun as he was being robbed, Chicago police said.

The man was sitting in traffic in the first block of East Wacker Drive, near State Street, around 3 p.m., when a male attacker distracted him and another male snatched belongings from his vehicle, police said.

The victim, who has a concealed carry permit, fired his gun and the robbers fled the scene.

The pearl clutching from the betters would have been epic if Wacker and Michigan guy connected. We’re positive there will be additional opportunities soon enough.

Kids Will Be Kids v2

Kids on a pedal carA few weeks ago, we brought you the story of juvies jacking high end cars. Apparently, that no longer presents enough of a challenge for today’s idle youth and shooting it out with the cops is where it’s at.

A 12-year-old boy and two 17-year-olds have been charged with attempted murder after police say they fired at two Chicago cops while riding in a stolen car in Lawndale on the West Side.

No officers were injured and the three boys were arrested after a brief chase Monday night, police said in a statement.

[…]

All three suspects were charged with felony counts of attempted murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm at a police officer, aggravated possession of a stolen vehicle and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, police said.

Per usual, we expect the charges to be downgraded and/or mostly dropped, but if they do happen to stick, at least the 12-year-old will have plenty of time to turn his life around.

May Wrap-up

Carnac the Magnificent No amount of overtime can match the power of Mother Nature and nothing stops the stupid better than 40° temps matched with the wettest spring ever. No matter, “strategies” are working and we haven’t witnessed a May this slow since two Mays ago.

May 2017: 57 killed, 270 wounded
May 2016: 69 killed, 339 wounded
May 2015: 50 killed, 281 wounded
May 2014: 47 killed, 230 wounded

A breakdown of the month’s idiocy shows:

  • 53 shot & killed
  • 1 fatal PO shooting to blame
  • Averaged 10.4 people shot per day
  • 5 days were homicide-free.
  • 3 death investigations
  • 51 in serious or critical condition
  • 50 males killed vs 7 females
  • 58 teenagers shot, 19 killed
  • 12 grazed
  • 3 selfies
  • 23 #ShotInTheAss

Our May prediction wasn’t too far off especially given our thought that the cooler and wetter forecast would tamp things down. Now that the weather seems to becoming more in line with what everyone expects this time of year, we’re looking for 70 homicides plus another 350 shot and wounded vs last June’s 76 homicides and 373 wounded.

Memorial Day Weekend

Chicago Memorial Day ParadeAs has been our tradition, this weekend will mark the start of the annual Summer Stupidity & Shooting Season. Much like last year, we’ll expect to see around 250 homicides and an additional 1,200 shot and wounded between now and Labor Day weekend.

Final Shoot-o-Rahm-a Tally: 7 killed, 44 wounded
2016 Memorial Day tally: 10 killed, 67 wounded

Threat of Force?

Self Defense Zone?As the CPD runs rampant throughout the city causing mayhem, death and destruction, the Betters decided it would be best to reign in these marauding hordes, specifically when it comes time for some use of force.

Last week, as the Chicago Police Department announced a new use-of-force policy to focus of de-escalation and the sanctity of life, Supt. Eddie Johnson touched on the possibility of an officer being injured by a vehicle.

“If a vehicle is coming at an officer and that’s the only threat of force, the officer can get out of the way of it,” Johnson said.

Since a speeding, multi-ton vehicle that contains exponentially more kinetic energy than a bullet is not considered a weapon, officers simply need to step aside and let the good citizen through.

“The officers, along with another unit, come, get out of the vehicle to approach the individual, giving him verbal commands,” Nagode said. “The individual refuses to listen again, and is using the car to kind of ram the two vehicles in an attempt to escape.”

An officer was then pinned between the resident’s vehicle and his own squad car, Nagode said.

The pinned officer continued to tell the suspect to stop and get out, but he ignored him.

“The officer fires a shot,” Nagode said. “The subject, again, is . . . trying to ram the vehicles to get out. The officer, again, fires again. The subject was subsequently taken into custody without further incident.”

The officer suffered “severe damage to his right leg,” Nagode added.

Because the vehicle was the only threat of force, we expect CCSA to bring attempted murder charges against this negligent officer ASAP. After all, there is clearly no need to shoot someone who is attempting to flee to choir practice in a stolen car while ramming other cars and people.

Kids Will Be Kids

Brady Bunch Car Jacking SceneWhile shootings and homicides get most of the low trafficked crime headlines, other even less newsworthy, yet must-report crimes are way up as well.

Whether it’s a Bears wide receiver’s Maserati or the 2006 BMW heisted in an incident that led to a man being shot early Tuesday, carjackings are making headlines around downtown Chicago and on the West and North sides.

And city crime statistics show their numbers have been on the rise: Vehicular hijackings in Chicago nearly doubled between 2015 and 2016 and are occurring with the same frequency this year.

Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the uptick “appears to be a pattern between Area Central and Area North involving juveniles and targeting higher-end vehicles.”

And why the hell not? When you have a 90%+ chance of getting away with killing or maiming someone, especially as a juvie, lifting someone’s Beemer is damn near a sure thing…

Of the 270 carjackings this year, 14 cases have ended in an arrest, records show.

And of those 14 arrests, we’ll wager that most go no where once the State’s Attorney gets the case. The last thing the Cook County Jail needs is more people attending the daily taxpayer funded Jail Guard Beat Down Pizza Party.

Self Defense (Junk Shot Edition)

Self Defense ZoneWhile some Aldermen are growing a pair and saying what many have been thinking for decades, their constituents on the other hand are taking a pair.

“A man with a conceal carry license shot an armed man who tried to stick him up late Wednesday morning on the Southwest Side, Chicago police said.

Shortly after 11:30 a.m., the victim was standing outside his vehicle in the 5300 block of South Pulaski Road when two men approached and demanded his car keys, police said.

Instead of handing over his keys, the victim shot one of the men in the groin area. The other man took off, but he was caught a short time later, police said.”

“No innocent balls were lost” – Ald. Raymond Lopez probably.

April Wrap-up

Carnac the Magnificent Where March produced chants of “CRIME IS DOWN” due to a slight decrease in the increase, April is being ignored and is instead being rolled into the entire year as proof the decrease is increasing.

April 2017: 48 killed, 270 wounded
April 2016: 40 killed, 274 wounded
April 2015: 37 killed, 204 wounded
April 2014: 37 killed, 232 wounded

A breakdown of the month’s idiocy shows:

  • 46 shot & killed
  • 0 CPD shootings to blame
  • Averaged 10.5 people shot per day
  • 8 days were homicide-free. Success?
  • 4 death investigations
  • 58 in serious or critical condition
  • 47 males killed vs 1 female
  • 81 teenagers shot, 11 killed
  • 19 grazed
  • 1 selfie
  • 17 #ShotInTheAss

Our March prediction was pretty good, however we’re not so sure about May. While last May jumpstarted the summer shooting season with 69 homicides and 339 wounded, this May is starting off much cooler and wetter. We’re looking for 60 homicides plus another 300 shot and wounded along with the usual 70+ ventilated over Memorial Day weekend.

*The story behind the image

1000

Rahm-thousand BillIt seemed like only yesterday, or maybe a few weeks ago, when March wrapped up slightly less shittier than the previous March, the political linear Sharpie lines calculated crime is and will be down. In reality, this nonsense is fluid and a slower period will be made up for by a busier period. Hence today we find ourselves more or less on pace with 2016.

“Two people were killed and five others were wounded over a single hour in Chicago on Monday as the number of gunshot victims this year passed the 1,000 mark.

The city reached the grim milestone four days later than last year, which saw the worst gun violence in two decades, according to data kept by the Tribune.

As of Tuesday morning, at least 1,008 had been shot in Chicago this year. Last year, the city passed the 1,000 mark on April 20.

There have been at least 182 homicides this year, just two fewer than this time last year, according to Tribune data.”

Now that a new normal has been established there’s nothing to see here.

Party Crasher

Party CrashersOne of this past weekend’s newly ventilated came at the hands of a disgruntled party crasher who will now have an opportunity to turn his life around.

“It all began sometime after 11 p.m. Saturday when Warren and a friend tried to crash a party in the 2900 block of North Sheffield Avenue, Assistant State’s Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said during a bond hearing.

The party was hosted by a local university student and his roommate, prosecutors said. A witness confirmed Monday that several guests attend DePaul University.

The host told Warren he wasn’t welcome, Scaduto said, but Warren soon pushed his way into the Lakeview apartment as a throng of guests arrived.

Several party-goers asked Warren to leave after he became aggressive and touched several women inappropriately, prosecutors said. According to Scaduto, Warren and his guest soon agreed to leave — but not before Warren slapped and punched two guests on his way out the door.

Warren returned a short while later, prosecutors said, and began asking guests if they wanted to fight while boasting that he had a gun.

Warren left once more, authorities said, but soon entered the party for a third time through a back entrance about 1:15 a.m. Sunday. That’s when Warren opened fire, Scaduto said, striking a West Ridge man four times in his thigh, ankle and knee.”

Once the Cook County State’s Attorney dismisses all charges just because, we’ll look for Mr. Warren to once again bestow his idiocy on another unsuspecting Chicagoan in the near future.

March Wrap-up

Carnac the Magnificent After February’s disaster, March settled down a bit to a more historical run rate (with the help of winter weather) which was promptly interpreted as an epic CRIME IS DOWN! moment. Crime is now so far down that last year is the only year out of the past eight to (barely) outpace this year.

March 2017: 38 killed, 176 wounded
March 2016: 49 killed, 282 wounded
March 2015: 35 killed, 179 wounded
March 2014: 27 killed, 104 wounded

A breakdown of the month’s idiocy shows:

  • 36 shot & killed
  • 1 non-fatal LEO shooting
  • Averaged 6.8 people shot per day
  • 15 days were homicide-free. Success!
  • 2 death investigations
  • 33 in serious or critical condition
  • 33 males killed vs 3 females
  • 50 teenagers shot, 7 killed
  • 8 grazed
  • 2 selfies
  • 14 #ShotInTheAss

Looking ahead, April is always mixed bag – cold and rainy vs warm and sunny – will help dictate how the month plays out. As spring showers give way to May flowers, spring training for the summer shooting season will pick up in earnest. We’re looking for 47 homicides plus another 250 shot and wounded.

Chicago Values Update

Superbad Fake IDPlaying off of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s “Hug-A-Thug” program, the mayor seeks to shore up the gangbanger vote with this foolish idea:

Mayor Rahm Emanuel proposed a Chicago municipal ID card program this week specifically for the benefit of gangbangers and other lowlife criminals. The proposal brought before the City Council is aimed at further placating criminals and politicians who fear a federal crackdown may compromise the city’s values.

While the exact details have yet to be worked out, City Clerk Anna Valencia’s office would review the fraudulent documents provided by criminals used to prove their identities and gang affiliation, but the city would not have permission to keep that information, as was done with Chicago’s now defunct gun registry. The ordinance states “shall not maintain a record of an applicant’s address, IR number, wannabe rapper Youtube channel, Facebook account, stolen car’s license plate or government issued telephone number.”

The mayor’s move came after Attorney General Jeff Sessions threatened to withhold federal money from cities that don’t cooperate with federal law. Emanuel downplayed the move instead saying “the ID will represent Chicago’s values as a crime welcoming city”.

“I’m fulfilling my pledge that we are going to be a city that is open and welcoming to gangbangers, crime and general mayhem,” Emanuel said. “We want our criminal class to feel comfortable while turning their life around and to not worry about arrest or anti-criminal persecution at the hands of so called “law enforcement”,” Emanuel finished with a double air quote gesture.

The ordinance requires all city departments and businesses to accept the card as a valid form of identification as Emanuel seeks to give gangbangers a way to identify themselves while engaged in a criminal acts, visiting the emergency room or lying dead in an alley.

“We’re hopeful that Chicago’s taxpaying victim class will be open to this ID and pledge to offer discounts at museums, sporting events, restaurants, shops and most importantly, hospitals and funeral homes,” Emanuel said.

When asked how much this program may cost, Valencia stated there currently isn’t an estimate however campaign donations, kickbacks, skimming, graft and votes are expected to increase inline with the crime rate. “We’re guessing the taxpayer will get f***ed over as usual,” Valencia chortled “but we [criminals] should come out way ahead.”

F’d over indeed.

Stroller Profiling

Armed baby stroller. Anyone with kids knows that the best time to take little Emma or Liam on a walk is at 2 o’clock in the morning. Coincidentally, it also happens to be the ideal time to do some neighborhood gunrunning.

“Police were monitoring cameras in the area of 45th and Wood streets because of gunfire there about 11 p.m. Sunday and saw two women enter a house about 2:15 a.m. Monday, one carrying a backpack and the other a bag.

They left with a stroller about five minutes later.

Police asked officers on the street to “conduct an investigatory stop,” which they did in the 4500 block of South Hermitage Avenue, about a block from where the women were first seen, officials said.

After asking if there were any weapons in the stroller, which was covered, one of the women said yes, police said.

Officers said they found a Mossberg Model 472 30-30 rifle with two rounds and a spent shell casing wrapped in blankets.

Police also found a Smith & Wesson 9 mm with 15 live rounds, an extra magazine with 15 rounds, an extra magazine and a box of 9 mm ammunition in a diaper bag on the stroller’s seat.”

We’re now adding anti-stroller infantists to the the list of anti-, -ists and -isms that apply to the CPD.

Ballsy Move

Junk shot26th and California is probably one of the more law enforcement/criminal justice populated areas of Cook County, yet here’s someone getting a hi-speed lead vasectomy in broad daylight.

A brazen midmorning shooting outside the bustling Cook County criminal courthouse on Monday left a 21-year-old man critically wounded and at least one regular to the sprawling Southwest Side complex rethinking his safety.

“These guys don’t have any boundaries,” said defense attorney Stuart Goldberg, who pulled into a parking lot next to the crime scene minutes after the shooting.

Police said the 21-year-old victim was walking on his way to the Leighton Criminal Court Building at 26th Street and California Avenue when he was hit by shots fired from someone in a white van at about 9:25 a.m. Two off-duty Chicago police officers pursued a man and made an arrest, authorities said. Police said a gun was recovered.

The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition with six gunshot wounds to the groin area, officials said.

Six junk shots. Given the usual ‘spray and pray’ MO of the city’s excitable youth, that’s one hell of a tight grouping.

Update: “Trick Shot” Tabari Harris, 19, has been charged in the shooting.

Update II: So much for that tight group: Several witnesses reported hearing three or four gunshots, and the victim was struck twice in the stomach and once in the buttocks. Initial police reports said the victim was shot six times in the groin.

Self Cleaning Oven

Self Cleaning OvenSince Cook County can’t or won’t do their job, we’ll leave it to the street to dish out justice.

“A Chicago man accused of murder who beat his case when prosecutors couldn’t give him a speedy trial was killed after leaving Cook County Jail on Monday night, according to authorities.

Kamari Belmont, 23, was being held on separate murder and robbery cases stemming from a single night in 2015 in which he was accused of shooting one man during a robbery who later died and robbing another man a couple of hours later.

Cook County prosecutors in January dropped murder charges against Belmont and his co-defendant, Terrance Hogan, 23, after allowing too much time to elapse under the state’s speedy trial statute without bringing the case to trial…

[…]

At 5:30 p.m. Monday, a friend of Belmont’s posted $10,000 bond. Belmont was released at 11:12 p.m.

Someone pulled alongside him in a white SUV on California Avenue a couple of blocks south of Cook County Jail on Monday night before midnight and started shooting. Belmont was shot multiple times.

The white SUV crashed, and those inside fled, according to police. Belmont collapsed in the street trying to flee and died at the scene.”

In summary, Cook County did nothing in two years other than release an alleged killer and blow massive amounts of taxpayer cash yet the street handled its business in 6 hours.

Arborists

Fallen TreeFirst the city decides to un-ban plastic bags thereby choking salmon and baby birds everywhere, now they’ve gone ahead and doomed us all with their institutional arborism.

“Mayor Rahm Emanuel made slight changes Wednesday to his plan to spend almost $15 million in leftover property tax rebate money, avoiding what could have been more sizable, embarrassing City Council opposition to the package.

After many council members balked at the mayor’s idea to spend $500,000 of the unused money to plant 1,000 trees, he agreed to pull that out and instead put that cash toward anti-violence technology like a test program to create crime-fighting intelligence centers.

That allowed some of those who had been in opposition to change their votes, saving Emanuel from having to publicly confront a larger bloc of aldermen voting against him and calling into question his commitment to fighting violence.

Aldermen approved his new proposal by a 35-10 vote Wednesday.

Freshman Ald. Raymond Lopez, 15th, had fronted the opposition to the mayor’s plan, saying the planned tree planting and lack of street-level anti-violence funding showed the wrong priorities at a time many Chicago neighborhoods are beset by violent crime.

But he came around to support it after the changes, with Emanuel also agreeing to find at least $1 million to finance toward violence interruption programs like the CeaseFire program.”

Unlike these “programs” and most other things the city blows cash on, trees are at least tangible and provide much needed shade for evidence technicians to gather crime scene evidence that the states attorneys can ignore.

Self Defense ZoneLast week we noted the story of a local car thief being given a taxpayer funded tour of the ER courtesy of concerned residents. Now residents in the far western neighborhood of Dunning are none too keen about having shitheads inquire about gang their membership.

From a pristine block of worker cottages near the city’s western border, Daniel is seven years and 15 miles removed from his former life as a gang member.

On Monday afternoon, he got a shocking reminder of that past.

Just before 5 p.m., the 23-year-old, who’s using a pseudonym out of fear for his safety, was walking with his brother in an alley behind the 3600 block of North Oriole Avenue when a man pulled up next to them in a green Honda sedan and demanded to know their gang affiliation, he said.

“He was revving his engine, and when we didn’t say nothing, he said ‘Hey, I’m talking to you, n—-!” said Daniel.

The driver veered out of the alley, wheeled back around and the man fired six gunshots from his window before screeching away, he said.

“Almost all my neighbors feel less safe now,” said Jeff Eichler, examining a bullet hole in the rear bumper of his Hummer. “I’ve even heard some people talking about moving.”

“This is what’s happening everywhere now,” Eichler said. “I told the cops that if they don’t do anything and the guy comes back, I might have to drop him myself.

Be warned Dunning dwellers, for if such an event were to occur, the outrage mobile will be quickly dispatched for scalp processing. Just ask Mt. Greenwood.

Street Justice

Charles Bronson - Death WishWe suspect that stories like these are more common than reported and/or will become more commonplace as the CPD stays fetal.

“The shooting of a 17-year-old on Sunday might have been “street justice” for his attempts to break into a car, a police official said.

Speaking at a meeting of residents Tuesday evening, Near West Police District Cmdr. Ed Kulbida said the shooting near Racine Avenue and Huron Street came after the teen and someone else was seen breaking into someone’s car. They were followed and the teen was shot in the leg.

“These people in the neighborhood, they didn’t like that,” said Kulbida of the break-ins, adding of the pair, “I don’t think they’ll do that again.”

The police report said the shooting occurred at 5:35 p.m. and that the shots were fired from the back seat of a dark-colored car. The teen took himself to Stroger Hospital.

On Monday, some in a crowd of more than 250 residents in the basement of the Goldblatt’s Bros. Building, 1625 W. Chicago Ave., laughed at the explanation while others appeared uneasy.”

It’s likely that the neighborhood criminal justice system will provide a stronger deterrent against such future actions than Cook County’s.

January Wrap-up

Carnac the Magnificent Last January set the tone for 2016 and this January just wrapped up singing the same tune. Buckle up. It’s going to be a long year.

January 2017: 55 killed, 258 wounded
January 2016: 57 killed, 246 wounded
January 2015: 32 killed, 120 wounded
January 2014: 24 killed, 82 wounded

A breakdown of the month’s idiocy shows:

  • 53 shot & killed
  • 2 stabbed
  • 2 fatal police shootings
  • All 31 days tallied at least 2+ shot
  • 4 days were homicide-free. Success!
  • 48 in serious or critical condition
  • 53 males killed vs 2 females
  • 67 teenagers shot, 9 killed
  • 19 grazed
  • 2 selfies
  • 10 #ShotInTheAss

Looking ahead, February is not only the shortest month of the year but also the quietest. Still, last February managed to put up 46 homicides with an additional 156 shot and wounded. Since the SS Shitshow seems to be stuck at full flank, we’re looking for 50 homicides (~7 St. Valentine’s Day Massacres) plus another 175 shot and wounded.

LiberaceA summer weekend overtime scenario was put in place in order to desperately keep this January from besting last January. While there was a noticeable drop in stupidity from the usual west side dumpster fires, we still tallied a slightly about average weekend for this time of year.
